When a Pyramid Salesman Opened a Door We Didn't Expect

It started with a Facebook ad.

Someone called Ariana Leblanc — a professor of 20th century American history at a university in Boston, if you believed the copy — was selling resin pyramids containing metal shavings and a crystal. The pitch was elaborate and clever: Wilhelm Reich, the FDA book burning of 1956, suppressed science, a personal story of cognitive transformation, and a product link at the bottom. The kind of thing that circulates endlessly in the wellness-adjacent corners of social media, trailing enough historical truth to make the fiction plausible.

I put it to Claude AI and asked: can you tease out the facts from the dross?

What followed was one of the more unexpected intellectual journeys I've had — and I've been publishing conversations and research on this site long enough to have had a few. The pyramid was dispatched quickly enough. The history of Wilhelm Reich turned out to be genuinely interesting. And then something happened that neither I nor my interlocutor — Claude, Anthropic's AI — anticipated. Pulling on the thread of what Reich was actually observing, and why the institutional response to him was so disproportionate, led us into territory that turned out to be consequential in ways the pyramid salesman certainly didn't intend.

The conversation ran to many thousands of words. What it produced, at the end, was a research synthesis that the two of us have written up as a formal document — linking established science across six or seven disciplines into a framework that nobody appears to have assembled before, identifying specific experimental gaps, and pointing toward what may be a significant reframe of questions that matter for both human health and climate.

This post is the introduction to that full series of lessons. Here is what we found.

Reich Was Asking Real Questions

The book burning happened. On August 23rd 1956, six tons of Wilhelm Reich's books, journals, and research were burned by federal agents at the Gansevoort Incinerator in New York City, under a federal court injunction. Reich died in Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary in November 1957.

The pyramid ad wanted you to conclude: they burned the books, therefore the books contained dangerous truth. That's a logical fallacy, and we dispatched it. Governments burn things for many reasons, including bureaucratic overreach, institutional embarrassment, and the blunt operation of regulatory capture. Destruction is not evidence of effectiveness.

But — and this is where the conversation started to open up — Reich was not simply a crank. His early work on character analysis and body armoring was serious, influential, and has been absorbed into body-centred psychotherapy without attribution. His Mass Psychology of Fascism asked important questions about why ordinary people embrace authoritarian submission that later thinkers explored more cautiously. And his core intuition — that there might be something organising and energetic about life that isn't fully captured by chemistry alone — turns out to point in a direction that contemporary science is beginning to take seriously.

Not orgone energy. Not cosmic accumulation. But the specific question of whether living systems use electromagnetic fields as an organisational and information-carrying layer, above the level of genes and chemistry, is no longer a fringe question. It is, increasingly, a mainstream one.

Bioelectricity Is Real and It Changes Things

Michael Levin's research at Tufts University has demonstrated experimentally that voltage gradients across tissues carry morphogenetic information — information about how an organism should be built — that operates above the genetic level. In planaria flatworms, altering the bioelectric pattern causes permanent anatomical change without touching the genome. In frog embryos, bioelectric patterns in the developing face predict where eyes and other structures will form, and disrupting those patterns alters craniofacial anatomy predictably.

This is published in Nature and Science. It is replicated. The genome is unchanged. The anatomy changes. Which means there is an informational layer in biology — a bioelectric layer — that genomics does not describe.

Reich was working in 1940 without the conceptual tools to name what he was observing. The question his work raises, assessed against contemporary science rather than against the mythology that accumulated around him, is not whether orgone energy exists. It is whether he was detecting real electromagnetic field effects on biological systems through mechanisms that wouldn't be named for another fifty years.

The Non-Thermal Calcium Anchor

From Levin's bioelectrics, the conversation moved to a finding that turned out to be the anchor for everything that followed: external electromagnetic fields produce non-thermal biological effects involving calcium. This is not a hypothesis. It is documented across multiple independent laboratories, species, frequencies, and decades.

W. Ross Adey at UCLA demonstrated it in 1976. He found that a microwave field at very low intensity caused calcium efflux from brain tissue — but only when the field was modulated at 6-20 Hz. The carrier frequency alone produced nothing. The modulation within a biologically relevant frequency window was the active element. He called the frequency and amplitude ranges where effects occur "biological windows."

Martin Pall at Washington State University later proposed the leading mechanistic hypothesis: voltage-gated calcium channels in cell membranes are activated by weak external EM fields. Calcium influx drives a cascade that produces reactive oxygen species — free radicals that at low levels are essential signalling molecules and at high chronic levels cause oxidative damage.

The VGCC mechanism is a leading hypothesis, not a proven fact. The non-thermal calcium effects are established. That distinction matters and we maintained it throughout.

The Quantum Layer

Bird navigation brought quantum biology into the conversation. The radical pair mechanism in cryptochrome proteins — which allows migratory birds to sense Earth's magnetic field — is now confirmed as a genuine quantum biological phenomenon, operating in warm, wet biological tissue at body temperature. The assumption that biology is too warm and wet for quantum coherence had been the standard objection to quantum effects in life. Photosynthesis broke it first. Bird magnetoreception confirmed it.

A December 2024 paper in Nature Communications extended this further, showing that the quantum mechanism involves superoxide — a reactive oxygen species. The quantum biology of magnetic sensing and the chemistry of oxidative stress are connected at a molecular level. This is not a coincidence. It suggests something deep about the relationship between electromagnetic sensing and redox chemistry in living systems.

Experimental evidence that anthropogenic radiofrequency fields disrupt magnetic orientation in migratory birds is direct demonstration that human-generated EM fields interfere with this quantum biological mechanism at Earth-field intensities.

The Evolutionary Baseline

Rütger Wever's isolation experiments at the Max Planck Institute — 447 volunteers in underground bunkers shielded from natural electromagnetic fields over 25 years — showed that isolation from the Earth's background electromagnetic environment disrupted circadian rhythms and physiological function. Reintroducing Schumann resonance frequencies at 7.83 Hz resolved the disturbances.

The Schumann resonances are the natural electromagnetic frequencies of the Earth-ionosphere cavity, generated by global lightning activity, present throughout the evolution of life. The 7.83 Hz fundamental falls within the theta and alpha brainwave ranges. Biological systems appear calibrated to this background.

The implication is significant: brains didn't evolve to match the Schumann resonance. The Schumann resonance was always there, and brains evolved inside it. The modern electromagnetic environment represents a departure from that baseline. Levels of RF radiation around the 1 GHz frequency band have increased from extremely low natural levels by approximately 10¹⁸ times — a quintillion-fold — since the mid-20th century.

The Reframe That Changed Everything

At some point in the conversation, the framing shifted. We had been asking: what does EM radiation do to biology? A source-centred question. The reframe asked: what is the consequence of disrupting the balance between reactive oxygen species and the capacity to neutralise them — and what is the full spectrum of things that disrupt it?

EM radiation becomes, on this framing, one item on a list that includes chemical pollution, particulate air pollution, psychological stress, sleep deprivation, dietary antioxidant depletion, microbiome disruption, metabolic disease, and ageing. All of them converge on the same molecular pathway. All of them are studied in isolation. The compounding effects of multiple simultaneous disruptors on a single shared system have barely been studied at all.

The redox balance framework — developed by Helmut Sies and now mainstream in biochemistry — distinguishes three states: oxidative eustress, where ROS at physiological levels act as essential signalling molecules; hormesis, where moderately elevated ROS triggers adaptive strengthening; and oxidative distress, where the system is overwhelmed. The question is not whether ROS are present. It is where on the dose-response curve the system is operating, and what is pushing it there.

The total redox load on the average person in an industrialised country — the aggregate of all inputs to that single system — has not been measured anywhere. That is not a minor gap. It is the central missing measurement.

The Atmospheric Extension

The same framework applies at planetary scale. The hydroxyl radical is the central oxidant of the lower atmosphere — the atmosphere's self-cleansing mechanism. It determines the atmospheric lifetime of methane and hundreds of other trace gases. It is generated by photolysis of ozone in the presence of water vapour.

A peer-reviewed 2017 PNAS paper found that the renewed growth in atmospheric methane is mathematically better explained by a 7% decrease in global mean OH concentrations than by emission increases alone. A 2026 NOAA paper warned that if OH changes are modelled incorrectly, researchers may draw the wrong conclusions about methane sources.

This is the reframe applied to climate: the dominant policy framing treats methane as a source problem. The OH mechanism suggests it may also be a clearance capacity problem. The atmosphere's ability to clean itself may have been impaired by the aggregate outputs of industrialisation — VOCs, carbon monoxide, particulates, halogenated compounds — in ways that are not currently accounted for in climate policy.

The same positive feedback loop appears at both scales. Intracellularly: oxidative stress impairs mitochondrial function, which generates more ROS, which causes more oxidative stress. Atmospherically: methane accumulates because OH is depleted, which depletes OH further, which allows more methane to accumulate. Same dynamic, two scales — and they are connected physically through the lung, where atmospheric chemistry meets cellular biology.

Why EM Radiation May Be the Distinctive Disruptor

Against the full disruptor map, electromagnetic radiation occupies a structurally distinct position. Not necessarily because any single exposure event is more damaging than chemical alternatives — but because of features that no other disruptor shares.

It has increased by 10¹⁸ times from the baseline biology evolved within. It operates directly through the signalling infrastructure biology uses — ionic gradients, membrane potentials, bioelectric fields — rather than through chemical incompatibility. Biological systems cannot ignore it because they are built to respond to it. It attacks both sides of the redox balance simultaneously: increasing ROS production while impairing the mitochondrial function that powers the antioxidant response. And it is ubiquitous and continuous in a way no chemical pollutant is — present everywhere in the inhabited world, 24 hours a day, with no unexposed baseline population.

A 2018 Lancet Planetary Health commentary explicitly identified the potential effects of anthropogenic EM fields on the Schumann resonance, and on atmospheric components more broadly, as unstudied questions requiring urgent investigation.

What We Produced

The conversation ended with a synthesis document, written jointly, that maps the established evidence, the leading hypotheses, and the specific experimental gaps across all of these domains. It identifies seven concrete research questions that would resolve the key uncertainties — from the O'Halloran zinc-calcium-EM question at the scale of fertilisation to the atmospheric EM-OH pathway at planetary scale.

The irony we noted at the end is worth repeating here: the technology whose electromagnetic footprint may be the most significant unexamined disruptor in the map is the same technology that made the conversation possible. That is not an argument against the technology. It is an argument for understanding it more completely than we do.
