Sunday Thoughts 013

Someone much, much smarter than most of us made the observation that intelligence is partly measured by the ability to hold two opposing thoughts simultaneously. Or something like that….

Bigots can’t do that.

Yet many bigots are highly intelligent.

What to do?

You can use the words of bigots to strengthen your own thinking. Get away from sympathies and antipathies and focus on the thoughts.

In social media, follow them, let their thoughts join the others in your head, learn how to hold them apart and not judge them – no matter how abhorrent. Just hold them there and observe them.

It’s a form of meditation but more active, more “muscular”.

Use those bigoted thoughts as the “mental weights” you need to exercise your own muscular thinking.

Sunday Thoughts is a weekly series of sometimes incomplete thought pieces to stimulate thinking, and possibly annoy you.
