Sunday Thoughts 012

Putting the Individual at the Centre of Everything

We all say, “I”
We are all individuals
We are this first

After this,
We are members of a group
By sex, gender, race, ethnicity, social status, sexual preference

So a true and proper meeting
Will be first with an individual
Just as we expect to be met as our “I”
So do each of them
It is undeserving that we should consider anything but.

So, too, for our institutions.
If we are serious about “putting people first”,
“Customer-centric service”,
“Being human”, etc
Then we need to flip things around.

We, humans, are not here to serve the economy,
Politics, business plans or technology.
They, being human creations, are here to serve us.

We have somehow reached about point whereby
Humans serve human creations.
There is something a little absurd in that.

Should not human creations, serve humans?
Can we not re-conceive our creations so they serve us?
Sure, businesses need to be profitable
Otherwise they are a hobby

And politics is run along party lines
In an adversarial setting.

But we can still make their purpose
The service of individuals
Can we not?
