Sunday Thoughts 009

Willpower and Individuality

Part 1

We talk, write, read about agency, about the power of the individual spirit, about raising consciousness. And a whole lot of other stuff, vaguely related.

There are calls for ego-less xyz, for the use of psychotropic substances to help raise consciousness, and for the use of meditation, yoga and other Eastern traditions to help find inner peace.

All these are good. However….

If we are true to our birth culture (and I speak here as a white, Western guy), then we are Western; European, Anglo-American, Five Eyes. And the West is predominantly an ego-driven, will-infused culture. Capitalism is the economic peak of that and it is individualistic, power-hungry, competitive and egoist.

But here’s the kicker.

Negating the ego won’t do anything to fix it. Every time you say, “I”, you are speaking from ego.

The unconstrained use of ego-hood got us into this mess, the will-infused ego is the only way out of it.

And out of it does not mean less ego or less will or trance-like consciousness. It means more.

To be continued…
